Happy, Healthy Smiles!!

At Magestro Orthodontics, we’re all about happy, healthy smiles, and teaching patients about proper oral care during orthodontic treatment is the first step to that goal. Here are five simple things to do to keep your smile in tip-top shape for the day you get those braces off! [via WebMD]

First, and most importantly, make sure that you brush your teeth regularly. Brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride-containing toothpaste is vital to a healthy mouth. Make sure you softly brush all the surfaces of your teeth.

Next, be sure to floss daily. Flossing every day 1). clears away plaque before it can cause damage and 2). can also clean plaque at the gum line, where plaque is known to hide.

Third, make regular appointments with your dentist (no skipping!). Even if you brush and floss daily, you’re still at risk for plaque. Over time, plaque hardens on the teeth and turns into tartar. Dentist visits every 6 months will lower your chance of getting cavities or losing your teeth while wearing braces.

Fourth, make sure to eat your fruits and veggies! Believe it or not, many fruits and vegetables play a key role in keeping plaque off our teeth. These include apples, carrots, cucumbers and many others. When you eat these types of fruits and veggies just be sure to cut them up into bite sized pieces to avoid breaking off brackets on your braces.

And last but not least, before you reach for that candy bar or can of soda, remember to not give in to your sweet tooth. Consuming beverages and junk food with high sugar content allows sugar to stick to our teeth. The bacteria, then, becomes plaque, which turns into acid and damages your teeth.

Remembering (and doing!) these five things will keep your mouth as healthy and happy as it can be during your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Magestro. Happy smiles!
